English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard: Antigua was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and was a British Colony up until its independence in 1981, and as a result, it has an incredible history. English Harbour is one “must see” destination as it was Lord Horatio Nelson’s home for quite some time. The Museum of Antigua & Barbuda is housed in the old Court House at the corner of Long and Market Streets. Built in 1750, it's the oldest building in Antigua. Exhibits explore Antigua's geological origins and political history, the culture of the Arawaks (with a life-sized house), and a model sugar plantation. The museum is also a good source of information on other historic sites dotting the island. On Church Street is the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which has been called "the most imposing of all Cathedrals in the West Indian Province".
