Wedding Legal Requirements

Legal Requirements For Getting Married in Antigua

For couples who want to get married at Blue Waters, we are here to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible beginning with the legal requirements for wedding ceremonies.

Please take note of the following:

The ceremony will be conducted by a marriage officer and is legally recognized. Ceremonies can be performed one full working day after arriving, subject to availability, between the hours of 9.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays.

A catholic wedding must take place in a church. Marrying in a Commonwealth country means however that the only record of the wedding outside of Antigua is the marriage certificate which is completed and given to the couple on their wedding day. If this document is ever lost, a copy would need to be obtained from the Registrar in Antigua.

Legal requirements and original documents which must be brought with you to the
hotel include:

  • Valid Passport (non-English passport holders require translation).
  • Birth Certificate.
  • Proof of Status i.e.; If one of the parties is divorced, the proof of Decree Absolute is required, either the original or a notarised copy sealed by the clerk of the court.
  • In the case of a widow/widower, the death certificate of the previous spouse is required.
  • If change of name by deed poll or adoption, then proof is required.
  • If under the age of 18, the consent of one or both parents or guardian is required in the form of an affidavit stamped by the notary public.
  • For church weddings, most ministers require proof of membership.
  • The marriage must be solemnised by a marriage officer (usually the registrar for special license) who is entitled to payment of reasonable traveling expenses.

It is essential that original documents are taken to the hotel and anything not in English must be translated into an English document, which is to be signed and stamped by a solicitor stating that they are true translation of the original.
